Nye Deichman, Oslo’s new main library, will have a central and prominent placing in the capital’s new district of Bjørvika. A modern and dynamic public library provides unique opportunities to create a contemporary and relevant interpretation of the library’s role and potential.
The ambition for the Nye Deichmanske central library is to create a vibrant social space that stimulates knowledge development and technological skills, in addition to facilitating meetings across population groups. The new building will make a far larger area available compared with today. Available public areas are expected to increase from 2,400 m2 to approx. 10,500 m2, and an increase in visitor numbers is anticipated from the current 1 million per year to 2-3 million.
Brekke & Strand has participated in the design team and developed the project all the way from the architectural competition. We have been active in both the user and design process to develop solutions for, inter alia, acoustic damping of open spaces in the library, distributed ventilation spaces, façades, an auditorium and a cinema.
