Kristiansand’s new theatre and concert hall is the second largest investment in a cultural building in Norway after the Opera House in Oslo. For Sørlandet, the project is unique with regard to both function and volume. Kilden accommodates three artistic institutions – Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Agder Theatre and Opera South. It contains four halls, which it must be possible to use simultaneously by users with different needs, and the planning phase therefore imposed very high standards for the acoustic design.
Brekke & Strand were responsible for the acoustic and electro-acoustic engineering of Kilden. An essential goal was excellent room acoustics for symphonic music in the Concert Hall. Now that the concert building has opened its doors to the public, the response shows that Kilden is undoubtedly at the top of the acoustic scale, both in Norway and internationally: “44 musicians in the orchestra pit create a sound that would be the envy of every theatre in the country. The hall has fantastic acoustics, which sound very well even at the back row of the gallery.” (Kulturspeilet 03.02.2012)
